Brother Pedro was canonised in Guatemala in 2002 due to his work as a missionary in this country, where he went when he was only 23 years old and where he carried out a whole range of social and apostolic work in the 17th century.
The Bethlehemite Order, of which the saint was the founder, began the construction of a chapel on the site of his birthplace, but due to political issues at the time, the work was stopped and resumed in the 1980s, and was completed in 2002, coinciding with the year of Brother Pedro’s canonisation.
This sanctuary in Tenerife, as well as the one in Guatemala where his remains rest, are places of pilgrimage. In Vilaflor begins the route that descends to the Cave of Brother Pedro, where the saint took refuge with his flock from the harsh winters of the high mountains. It is one of the three pilgrimage shrines dedicated to the cult of Brother Pedro, together with the Cave of the Saint itself near El Médano and the Church of San Francisco el Grande in La Antigua Guatemala, where his tomb is located.
Inside this sanctuary there is a relic with a vertebra of the saint as well as the bell he used to summon the faithful.
It is a temple with a single nave built in stone, inside it is the main altar that houses the image of Saint Brother Pedro and Mother Encarnación Rosal, reformer of the Betlemita order in the 19th century.
In the central part of the altarpiece there is, in high relief, the scene of the Nativity of Jesus in Bethlehem, the central theme of the Bethlehemite spirituality.
