San Miguel de Abona follows the characteristic model of a linear layout along the entire length of Calle de la Iglesia. This historic complex is arranged along this road, which corresponds to the old royal road that runs through the midlands of the Abona region and connected Granadilla and San Miguel with the San Lorenzo Valley.
The complex is made up of one- and two-storey buildings with features typical of traditional domestic architecture. A second type of dwelling corresponds to the one-storey house or “terrera”, associated with a more humble population, which represents the majority percentage of the buildings in the complex.
The initial urban fabric is clustered at its eastern end around the church of San Miguel, whose origins date back to 1665. It was soon insufficient to cater for the growing population, and its enlargement was encouraged. In the first half of the 19th century, the construction of the nave was completed, together with the two sacristies and the tower. In 1953, a new tower was added and the traditional façade was renovated.
Around the perimeter of the church square are a series of traditional buildings, including the Municipal Library and the house where Juan Bethencourt Alfonso was born. On the north side of the church are the old water jets that supplied the village.
The origins of the village of San Miguel are uncertain, as there is only evidence of the construction of the chapel by the villagers in the middle of the 17th century.
