The construction of El Calvario dates back to the end of the 19th century (1877). Located on a promontory overlooking the municipality, it is a modest building, but of great artistic and historical value. At first it was a simple wall, where the three crosses were raised, confirming the place as a watchtower full of symbolism that would grow for decades, germinating the idea of creating a small sanctuary.
Its architectural importance is given by the grey and reddish stonework that determines the whole, which is not common in the Calvaries of the Canary Islands, contrasting with the white walls and the window that guards the cross and its figure, finished in a semicircular arch with different coloured glass that serves as a counterpoint to the tones of the stonework and the whitewashing of the façade. The Calvary serves as an architectural and theatrical space for the recreation of the catechetical values of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ.
It consists of a small enclosed chapel with a rectangular floor plan. It has a symmetrical façade with a clear intention of a funerary monument, with a single semicircular arched opening, closed by a glass case that houses the image of the Crucified Christ, a piece articulated to become a ‘Recumbent Lord’. The enclosure is surrounded by a wall that limits the space, which is accessed through a doorway that leads to the chapel on a small walkway guarded by cypress trees.
