The Granadilla tobacco drying shed was built in 1878 by José García Torres, one of the most important tobacco harvesters in the region of Abona, coinciding with the take-off of this crop, as an alternative to the cochineal crisis.
Associated with one of the most deeply rooted traditional activities in the southern bands of the island, its northern façade borders the old royal road of the south, in its section between El Río and Granadilla, incorporating an added value, represented by this important secular communication route that linked the main rural nuclei of the southern midlands.
The old tobacco drying shed is a heritage and architectural jewel of the southern region, converted into a large cultural and multi-purpose space, with a multi-purpose area. At the front of the building, which will be the main entrance point, a square has been created to serve as a resting place, and at the back, in the old existing vegetable garden, a patio and a viewpoint have been created for visitors to enjoy the views of the Camino Real del Sur.
The Granadilla tobacco drying shed is a single-nave building with a gabled roof, in the shape of a regular quadrilateral. The building is a faithful reflection of the importance of tobacco leaf exports in the municipality and the region, but it also had other uses throughout different periods, as it was the town’s comedy theatre and cinema, among other things.
