The Chiñama viewpoint is located in the upper area of the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, on a promontory from which there are magnificent views of the coastal area of the south of the island and the villages of Granadilla and El Médano, as well as Montaña Roja. This showcase that dominates the view of the south of the island is located in a completely rural and agrarian environment, between walls, farms of jable cultivation and irrigation channels. But the Chiñama Mountain was also a place of symbolic expression for the Guanche people, the island’s ancient inhabitants. Another aspect that shapes the environment is the presence of water in this area of the island, which has been highly valued by the locals, proof of which is the name of the village of Charco del Pino, near Chiñama, which owes its name to a small puddle in the shape of an ‘ere’ (water buried under the sandy bed of a ravine and which could be obtained by excavation). Likewise, the erosion of the ravines and the deposits of materials in the coastal area form part of the landscape that can be seen from the viewpoint, which is also close to the Church of San Luis de Francia with its charming square, where the ancient Danza de Arcos dance is performed every August.
